Essential Oils in Colour begins by describing each chemical family/functional group and its generally attributed properties. Each functional group is assigned a color that remains consist throughout the book.

At the core of Essential Oils in Colour is the ninety essential oil profiles that it presents (see list in table of contents, shown below). Each profile is known as a Caddy Profile, named after the author, and includes a visual and colorful pie chart that accompanies a list of the functional groups present for the oil. For each functional group, she lists the percentage present in the oil.

Rosemary Caddy explains that she studied hundreds of GC/MS reports and utilized the data to establish the information presented in her profiles.

For each profile, Caddy also includes a brief list that contains some of the constituents present in the oil accompanied by the color that identifies the functional group the constituent belongs to. Each profile also includes a list of the general properties and uses for each oil.

Essential Oils in Colour is especially helpful for visual learners and for those looking for a quick way to more clearly determine the functional groups prevalent in a particular oil.

Rosemary Caddy graduated from London University with a BSc Honours Degree in Science. AS a Reader and Principal Lecturer in Educational Research at Nottingham University she is the author of a range of educational materials for students of many disciplines. All the materials emphasize visual presentation to enable students to see, analyze and understand the world around them.

Rosemary is now a qualified clinical aromatherapist running her own clinic and carrying out a programme of research on the chemistry of essential oils. She runs lecture courses for aromatherapy students to help the understand and visualize their essential oils. The Caddy Classic Profiles, developed as a result of her research, enables students to enjoy the chemistry of their oils.
