Roman Chamomile Hydrosol

Anthemis nobilis / Chamaemelum nobile

Roman Chamomile Hydrosol

Roman Chamomile Hydrosol is a very gentle, soothing hydrosol that is great to use in skin care and it can be emotionally calming when added to room, body or linen sprays. Its sweet, pleasant aroma and skin care benefits makes it suitable for consideration for baby care applications like diaper wipes and calming room mists. See the Uses and Applications section below for cited uses from hydrosol experts Jeanne Rose, Suzanne Catty and Len and Shirley Price.

Roman Chamomile Hydrosol is usually quite pleasant smelling, particularly when it has been distilled using copper stills. It is bright, crisp, sweet, fruity and herbaceous.

Reported Properties, Uses and Applications

Suzanne Catty confirms that Roman Chamomile Hydrosol is mildly euphoric, sedating and helps to ease stress and help with depression, anxiety and insomnia.

Suzanne Catty recommends Roman Chamomile Hydrosol for baby care including use on baby's bed linens to provide a sense of calm. It can be used for diaper care and diaper rash. Catty recommends use of Roman Chamomile Hydrosol on sore/cracked nipples when nursing. Catty also suggests Roman Chamomile Hydrosol for use with anxious pets.

Topically, Catty encourages use of Roman Chamomile Hydrosol for skin care, but to use it modestly if you have dry skin. Likely due to its anti-inflammatory properties, she suggests it for use with rashes, rosacea, acne, burns and sunburn. [Suzanne Catty, Hydrosols: The Next Aromatherapy (Rochester, VT: Healing Arts Press, 2001), 82-83.]

Len and Shirley Price report that the Roman Chamomile Hydrosol that they analyzed consists of5-33% esters and 11-23 alcohols (these ranges do not include the water present in the hydrosol) and possesses the following properties: "antifungal, anti-infectious, anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, antiviral, bactericidal, balancing (to nervous system), calming, cicatrizant, decongestant, stimulating, uplifting ." [Len Price and Shirley Price, Understanding Hydrolats: The Specific Hydrosols for Aromatherapy: A Guide for Health Professionals (London: Churchill Livingstone, 2004), 102.]

Jeanne Rose adds that Roman Chamomile Hydrosol is a "psychic soother." [Jeanne Rose, 375 Essential Oils and Hydrosols (Berkeley, CA: Frog, Ltd, 1999), 170.]
