Holy Basil Essential OilHoly Basil Essential Oil is sometimes known as Tulsi Essential Oil. Used extensively in India and within Ayurvedic practices, Holy Basil is grown and distilled for aromatic, medicinal and spiritual purposes. Aromatically, Holy Basil Essential Oil resembles a cross between traditional Basil Oil and Clove Oil. Holy Basil contains a large percentage (up to 85%) of Eugenole, a chemical constituent that gives Clove Oil its characteristic aroma. The warm, sweet aroma of Holy Basil Oil lends well for creating energizing/stimulating diffuser and room mist blends. It is especially nice to work with when creating blends for men. I see great potential for Holy Basil Oil's use in blends intended to enhance focus while easing anxiety and stress. Holy Basil Oil is an oil that I recommend avoiding for topical use as it could possibly cause dermal irritation or sensitivity.
Aromatic Description: Strong, warming and spicy. Holy Basil Uses: Limited information exists on the documented use and safety of Holy Basil Essential Oil. Constituents: Sylla Sheppard-Hanger reports that Holy Basil Oil consists of up to 85% Eugenole. [Sylla Sheppard-Hanger, The Aromatherapy Practitioner Reference Manual (Tampa, FL: Atlantic Institute of Aromatherapy, 1994), 321.] Safety Information: Use Holy Basil Oil with caution and avoid in topical use, even if strongly diluted. Due to limited safety data, it is recommended that you play it safe and avoid use while pregnant or with babies and children.

General Safety Information: Do not take any essential oils internally without consultation from a qualified aromatherapy practitioner. Do not apply undiluted essential oils, absolutes, CO2s or other concentrated essences onto the skin. If you are pregnant, epileptic, have liver damage, have cancer, or have any other medical problem, use essential oils only under the proper guidance of a qualified aromatherapy practitioner. Use extreme caution when using oils with children and give children only the gentlest oils at extremely low doses. It is safest to consult a qualified aromatherapy practitioner before using essential oils with children. A skin patch test should be conducted prior to using an essential oil that you've never used before. Instructions on conducting a skin patch test and more safety information can be found by visiting the Essential Oil Safety Information page.
