Exploding with beautiful floral photography, Healing with Flowers by Anne McIntyre offers an intriguing overview of the utilization of flowering plants for medicinal applications. This is not an essential oil or aromatherapy specific book.

The general overview and perspective given within the first portion of the book is where this beautiful book shines. The photos, paper quality, lovely quotations, layout and the book's organization is quite alluring. However, I encourage readers of this book to fact check and use additional resources to verify the specific medicinal and usage claims that are included in the book. The book does not cite sources for the medicinal and usage claims it includes, and I'm concerned about some of the claims that I am reading.

Healing with Flowers offers profiles for 64 flowering species. Each profile includes all/most of the following information:

  • Botanical Name
  • Common Name
  • Lovely Quotation
  • Other Names the Flowers Goes By
  • Part(s) Used
  • Use as a Herbal Remedy
  • Use as a Homeopathic Remedy
  • Use as an Aromatherapy Oil*
  • Use as a Flower Essence
  • Growing
  • Edible Uses
  • Cautions
  • Recipe(s)

I am concerned that the book uses the subheading of Aromatherapy Oils as there is a lot of ambiguity when this term is used. Instead, it is best for authors and educators to clearly understand the distinction between essential oils, absolutes, CO2 extracts and macerated oils and use those terms to clearly convey exactly what is being spoken about. For example, the book refers to "Hops Oil" which could refer to the essential oil, CO2 extract or both. The book refers to Carnation Essential Oil, but there is no readily available pure essential oil of carnation. The book also speaks of Elderflower Essential Oil which I believe to be virtually non-existent. For this reason, I do not recommend fully heeding the advice given for the "aromatherapy oil" section.

Anne McIntyre's revised and expanded edition of her previous work, The Complete Floral Healer tells the story of the mythological, historical and current uses of flowers in healing and medicine and reminds us that their significance is as powerful today as it was in ancient times.

Their healing power permeates all aspects of our lives, helping us mark every event and ceremony from birth to death and bringing us joy and solace throughout the years. They have inspired poets, authors and artists and come to symbolise the whole range of human experience.

Beautifully illustrated with vibrant colour photographs, the book covers instead sixty-four flowers from around the world. Each flower chapter reveals the plant's historical and folkloric importance, details the medicinal use of each flowers as a herbal remedy and explores its use in aromatherapy, homeopathy and as a flower essence.

A deeper understanding of the unique character of each flower - its story, personality and energy - is woven through this book and is a key resource for anyone curious about flowers, as well as gardeners and herbalists alike.

Healing with Flowers aims to deepen our connection with the beauty and complexity of nature, helping us to strengthen our relationship to the environment around us - on which our future survival ultimately depends.
