Making Aromatherapy Creams & Lotions: 101 Natural Formulas to Revitalize & Nourish Your Skin

Author: Donna Maria
Publisher: Storey Books
Copyright: 2000
ISBN: 1-58017-241-5

Making Aromatherapy Creams & Lotions is a must-have book for those wishing to make natural aromatherapy skincare products. It is the first book that I've come across that combines wonderful explanations for the healing and aromatic uses of essential oils within skincare products in conjunction with doing a beautiful job explaining how to create the exquisite recipes.

Putting the wonderful layout, soft complimentary colors and lovely illustrations aside, Making Aromatherapy Creams & Lotions sets the stage by introducing the reader to the world of aromatics (essential oils, CO2s, hydrosols and other natural plant products including fruits and vegetables!) as well as information on which aromatics and natural products are best for each skin type. The chapter on Complementary Materials contains some of the best descriptions that I've read for fixed oils (also known as vegetable, vegetal or carrier oils) and other natural products for use in natural skincare products.

What I especially love about Donna Maria's book is that she provides a lot of instruction on how to customize recipes to suit individual needs. For instance, she provides 2 wonderful formulas for creams along with her insight and guidance into choosing the oils, liquid ingredients, aromatics, and other ingredients so that the reader can begin creating his/her own unique, personal products. Making Aromatherapy Creams & Lotions offers a solid foundation for understanding emulsification (combining the water/liquids and oils so they don't separate) and provides steps in making each creation. Donna Maria is sure to mention that not all batches turn out perfectly, and she provides hints on how to correct the troubled batch or what to try the next time.

The recipes included in Making Aromatherapy Creams & Lotions include more than just creams and lotions: creams, lotions, moisturizers, lip and nail balms, lotion bars (she properly calls them "balm bars" since lotion contains water and lotion bars don't), cleansers, and I'm probably forgetting a thing or two. The recipes have the most delightful names. I'm intrigued to try each and every one: Ballerina Butter, Helping Hand Cream, African Body Tapestry, All that Jazzmin, Honey Gleam, just to touch on a few.

Donna Maria includes several Aromatic Profiles on individuals who have become successful (in spirit and/or financially) selling their handcrafted aromatic skincare products. Aromatic quotes scattered throughout the book also lend a beautiful and motivational touch.
